State Agriculture Director Russell Kokubun has announced hell retire at the end of the year to return to his family farm in the Big Islands Volcano area. Governor Neil Abercrombie selected the former Hawai`i County Council Chair and State Senate Vice-President to lead the department shortly after his election in 2010.
Hes credited with moving various agriculture and sustainability measures forward, including support for farmers, new farm innovation, promoting locally grown food and investing in a solid agriculture infrastructure.
Kokubun is a political ally of Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa and political observers believe hell help organize Big Island support for her Democratic primary race against U.S. Senator Brian Schatz.
