HI news orgs to argue against sealing murder docs

A Hawaii judge will allow a Honolulu newspaper and other local news organizations to argue against sealing documents and tapes in a case involving a federal agent accused of murdering a man at a McDonald's in Waikiki.

Circuit Court Judge Karen Ahn granted permission on Tuesday for an attorney for the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, Hawaii News Now and Hawaii Reporter to appear at a Thursday hearing.

A lawyer for Christopher Deedy, the 27-year-old State Department special agent charged in the case, has asked that the case be dismissed because Deedy was preforming law enforcement duties.

City prosecutors asked that the motion be sealed on the grounds that the case would get publicity and taint potential jurors.

A prosecutor asked that the news outlets not be allowed to appear at Thursday's hearing.
