(Ken Hupp - KPUA) American Red Cross volunteers from Hawai`i are being dispatched to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy in areas including Long Island, Manhattan and Staten Island in New York and in New Jersey. Ten of thirty volunteers being mobilized flew out last night to White Plains, New York including three from the Big Island.
“Our main objective is to help out at shelters that are actually housing several thousand people at this time,” said Big Island volunteer Yukie Ohashi.
Hawai`i Red Cross CEO Coralie Matayoshi said their disaster assignments are expected to last from two to three weeks.
