HILO, Hawaii (AP) Big Island police are investigating the injury of a federal officer who stepped on a booby trap set in a marijuana patch.
The Hawaii Police Department said Wednesday the booby trap was made of nails and caused the officer to suffer puncture wounds.
He was injured when he ran into the brush area of a marijuana patch while chasing a wanted suspect in Puna. The officer was conducting warrant sweeps in the Ainaloa subdivision at the time.
The presence of the booby trap raises the level of the crime being investigated to first-degree commercial promotion of marijuana. This is a class A felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
