Hawaii official killed in plane crash remembered

HONOLULU (AP) Those who worked with Hawaii Health Director Loretta Fuddy are remembering her as a compassionate leader.

The 65-year-old state official died Wednesday in a plane crash as she was returning to Honolulu from a visit to Kalaupapa.

Appointed director of the state Department of Health in 2011, Fuddy was known for her role in President Barack Obama making his long-form birth certificate public in an attempt to end claims he was born outside the United States.

She recently led the department as it transitioned its marriage license system to allow gay couples to wed under a new state law.

Health Department officials say Fuddy was raised in Kaimuki and graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy. She earned degrees from the University of Hawaii and Johns Hopkins University.
