Meeting in Hilo today to review new driver license rules
The County of Hawaii is holding a meeting to explain the new requirements and to answer questions on applying for or renewing your driver's license or permit. The meeting will be held on Monday, May 21, from 5 – 6 p.m. at the Aupuni Center Conference Room, 101 Pauahi Street, in Hilo.
Federal and State mandates now prohibit the issuance of a driver license or permit to any person who is not legally authorized to be in the United States. Individuals applying for or renewing a Hawaii driver’s license or permit are required to provide proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security Number, and legal presence. Proof of an individual’s legal presence includes a U.S. birth certificate, U.S. passport or other documents.
This is the first in a series of meetings to inform the public about the new requirements to help reduce the wait time at the Department of Motor Vehicles and ensure that everyone comes in with the correct documents.
Information about the new requirements is available online at hawaiicounty.gov/finance-dl-hi-legal-presence. If you have questions, please email vehiclerl@co.hawaii.hi.us.
