Organic farmers call for more land to use

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) Hawaii's organic farmers say they could supply more food to the islands but much of the most suitable land that could be farmed is tied up in cattle ranching.

Paauilo Forest Farm owner Kyle Struder says he sees plenty of land that could be leased from Kamehameha Schools in the Hamakua District but it's in long-term leases for cattle.

He says that's not the best use or arable land and cattle could be using available hilly land.

West Hawaii Today reports Struder spoke Monday in Kailua-Kona.at a Kohala Center workshop on growing organics.

The chief executive of natural food store chain Down to Earth, Mark Fergusson, says organic food can be marketed and sold.

But he says stores can't get enough of organic foods.
