Police identify one man killed in crash



(Ken Hupp - KPUA) Police have identified one of the two men killed in Sunday night’s head on collision on Hawai`i Belt Road as 61-year old Miles Nakanishi of Hilo. Nakanishi was killed when a northbound pick-up driven by a 65-year old Hakalau man crossed the center line on the Hanawi Bridge and collided with the southbound multi-purpose vehicle operated by Nakanishi shortly before 7:30 p.m. 
 
The name of the other man is being withheld pending positive identification and notification of the next of kin. Two women, ages 60 and 80 along with a 6-year old boy and 11-year old girl, who were passengers in Nakanishi’s vehicle were taken to Hilo Medical Center by Fire Department rescue personnel. The two women remain confined at Hilo Medical Center in serious condition, while the children were flown to Queen’s Medical Center and Kapiolani Medical Center in critical condition. 
 
It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in this crash. The Big Island’s traffic death toll for 2012 now stands at 35, compared to16 at this time last year.
