HONOLULU (AP) U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz says all members of Hawaii's federal delegation and their staff are safe and accounted for after shots fired outside the U.S. Capitol prompted a shutdown of the complex.
Schatz said in a statement on Thursday that the lawmakers and staff followed appropriate emergency plan procedures.
The delegation includes U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono and U.S. Reps. Colleen Hanabusa and Tulsi Gabbard.
Witnesses and officials say a woman driving a black Lexus tried to ram through a White House barricade, then led police on a chase that ended in gunfire outside the Capitol.
The shots came as lawmakers inside the Capitol debated how to end a government shutdown. Police quickly locked down the entire complex for about an hour, and both houses of Congress went into recess.
