The Mahaiula and Kua Bay sections of Kekaha Kai State Park, also known as Kona Coast State Park in Kona were closed Tuesday afternoon following a reported shark attack.
A 28-year old man said he was about 100 yards out swimming to shore at Mahaiula Beach shortly before 1:00 p.m. when he spotted a shark, which bit him on the right thigh and right calf before releasing him. The swimmer made it so shore, where a Fire Department helicopter took him to Kona Community Hospital for treatment of injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. A 12-14 foot tiger shark was sighted in the area shortly after the attack.
The areas will remain closed until further notice.
