PUNA, Hawaii (AP) — Firefighters pulled a swimmer from the surf on the southeast side of the Big Island.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports Sunday that a Hawaii County search-and-rescue team responded when friends of a 37-year-old man said he got into trouble while swimming at Orr's Beach in Puna.
Friends said they tried to rescue the man, but he went under and they lost him.
The search-and-rescue divers found the man underwater about 10 yards offshore shortly after arriving at about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
The Fire Department used a helicopter and an ambulance to get the man to Hilo Medical Center.
The man's condition was not immediately released.
