PAHALA, Hawaii (AP) A body boarder on the Big Island has been bitten by a shark.
State and county officials say a 29-year-old Captain Cook man reported a shark bit him after 8 a.m. Wednesday while he was body boarding between Ninole and Punaluu Beach Park.
Big Island police said in a statement the man was treated for non-life threatening injuries at Kau Hospital.
Two friends who were body boarding with him said the shark was a 10-to-12-foot long tiger shark. He says he was 20 yards off shore in 8 feet of water when the shark attack occurred.
Hawaii County lifeguards closed nearby Punaluu beach park. The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says the beach will reopen at noon Thursday if there are no further shark sightings in the area.
