Activity picks up at Kilauea

(Ken Hupp - KPUA) There are signs to indicate that Kilauea Volcano may be headed for an explosive eruption. Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say the lava lake within Halemaumau crater rose to about 125 feet beneath the crater floor on Friday, which was its highest level since an explosive eruption occurred on March 19, 2008. Meanwhile, the summit and Pu`u O’o vent are swelling up and the number of earthquakes has spiked from an average of one to two per week to between five and fifteen per day. Chief Scientist Jim Kauhikaua says all the signs taken together indicate a possible eruptive event.
