HONOLULU (AP) A Honolulu city councilman says Kamehameha Schools will not proceed with development plans for a shopping center on preservation-zoned land in Hawaii Kai.
Stanley Chang tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that plans are suspended indefinitely for the Kuapa Gateway Parcel.
The shopping center was to have been anchored by a Foodland supermarket.
The 4.5-acre parcel is across Kalanianaole Highway from Maunalua Bay.
Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board chairman Greg Knudsen says he's not surprised by the decision.
He says community opposition has been overwhelming.
