A portion of Hapuna Beach State Park in West Hawai`i was temporarily closed after a diver found a bomb-like object in waters offshore Friday morning and took it to a park concession area.
Police and state conservation officers evacuated the area and set up a safety perimeter around the object, which was described as long, cylindrical, with a tail assembly totaling about 12 fins. It also appeared old and encrusted with corrosion and marine growths.
Army ordnance disposal experts took the object to Pohakuloa Training Area for disposal Friday evening. The park was re-opened on Saturday.
