UH Hilo Imagine Cup team APP creators meets with first responders

(From KPUA) Members of the University of Hawai`i at Hilos Team Poliahu gave first responders a demonstration of their application that won them the 2013 U.S. Microsoft Imagine Cup Championship Monday at County Civil Defense headquarters. The Help Me Help, application aids the community and emergency response personnel in disaster situations by allowing users to upload images of nearby hazards through the use of smart phones.
County Civil Defense Chief Darryl Olivera described Help Me Help as a tremendous application for first-responders in the emergency management community.
Were trying to manage incidents from within this building, so having photos and information coming to us live, from the field in real time gives us a better picture of whats going on out there without having to leave the building, Olivera said.
So well have that situational awareness first hand from people in the field, which includes the general public, not just first responders.
Olivera said having that info will enable authorities to channel their limited resources to the highest priority areas.
Team Poliahu, comprised of seniors Mike Purvis, Kayton Summers, Wallace Hamada and junior Ryder Donahue from the UH Hilo Computer Science Department, will head to St. Petersburg, Russia for the Imagine Cup Worldwide Finals in July.
