Pedestrian killed in downtown Hilo traffic mishap



(KPUA) A 61-year old Hilo woman has died from injuries she received in a Tuesday night motor vehicle/pedestrian collision at the intersection of Kamehameha Avenue and Kalakaua Street in downtown Hilo.

South Hilo patrol officers, responding to an 8:59 p.m. call determined the women was not in a marked crosswalk when she crossed Kamehameha Avenue south of Kalakaua Street and was hit by a southbound 1998 Honda four-door sedan driven by a 35-year old Hilo woman. The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 4:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
 
The Big Islands traffic death toll for 2013 now stands at 19, compared to 14 a year ago.
