Man charged in carjacking bound over for trial

(KPUA) A 19-year old former Mountain View man charged in last weeks carjacking at a Hilo shopping complex has been bound over for trial, with an arraignment and plea set for August 6th, before Circuit Judge Glenn Hara.

Detective Grant Todd testified at this weeks preliminary hearing that Alkapone Cruz-Balles told him he went to the Hilo Target Store on Maka`ala Street to take a vehicle and chose a victim who he thought looked easy. Cruz-Balles is charged with first degree robbery and auto theft for allegedly pointing a knife at 24-year old Alexander Guimares and commandeering his vehicle, which was later recovered at Isaac Hale Beach Park in Pohoiki.

The defendant said the main reason he took the vehicle was that he wanted to see his girlfriend, who was in Pahoa at the time.
