Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii turns 50

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) The Mormon-church owned Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

The Polynesian-themed park on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii was opened in 1963. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints created it to promote the Polynesian culture and provide work for students at Brigham Young University-Hawaii.

KSL-TV reports that more than 5,000 Mormons have traveled to Hawaii to celebrate this week. Those include alumni who worked there years ago, some in their 70s.

The park's website says more than 33 million people have visited the center over the 50 years.
