Big Island teacher to ride flying observatory

A Hawai`i Island middle school teacher will be taking flight this week aboard the worlds only flying observatory, which also houses the worlds largest flying telescope.

Randi Brennon of Pahoas Hawai`i Academy of Arts and Sciences will accompany research astronomers on NASAs Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy or SOFIA and share those experiences with her seventh and eighth grade students.

The airborne observatory enables scientists to study the formation of stars and planets; the chemistry of interstellar gases; the composition of comets, asteroids and planets; and super massive black holes at the center of galaxies by analyzing infrared light.

Brennon will take part in two 10-hour overnight flights from Wednesday night to Thursday morning and again from Thursday to Friday.
