GMO bill advances

The County Council Committee on Public Safety and Mass Transit has approved a bill that would restrict the use of genetically modified crops.

Tuesdays 6-2 vote sends Bill 113 to the full council for the first of two required approvals. The bill would ban the open-air cultivation of GMO crops but contains an exemption for the papaya industry and any other transgenic crops already grown. If adopted, it would become the second GMO bill passed by the county, which approved a ban on GMO taro and coffee in 2008.
