Lawmaker to give updates on typhoon relief

HONOLULU (AP) — State Rep. John Mizuno plans to share firsthand accounts of the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines by word of his own relatives.

Vice-Speaker Mizuno will talk to family members living in the region by phone and Skype during a noon news conference Friday at the State Capitol in Honolulu.

Mizuno's family is from Barugo town, which lies 30 miles from Tacloban city.

Mizuno also plans to give updates on relief efforts. He also will discuss organizations that can ensure donations reach people in need in the Leyte and Samar provinces.

Officials in the Philippines on Thursday said the death toll from Haiyan, one of the strongest typhoons on record, has risen to 5,560 with 1,757 others missing.
