Warden selected for Big Island prison

HILO, Hawaii (AP) A warden has been named for a Big Island prison that will re-open next year.

The state Department of Public Safety announced Tuesday the selection of Ruth Coller Forbes as warden of Kulani Correctional Facility.

The prison was closed in 2009 because of budget restraints.

The state says Forbes will be instrumental to Kulani's reopening, which is scheduled for July 1, 2014.

Gov. Neil Abercrombie pledged to reopen the prison, saying it will add jobs to the Big Island economy and bring back prisoners who were incarcerated in mainland facilities.

Forbes has been with the public safety department since 1995, rising to the rank of corrections supervisor at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.

There will be 96 full-time staff positions and about 200 low-risk inmates at Kulani.
