Man deemed competent to face murder charge

HILO, Hawaii (AP) A 44-year-old Big Island man has been deemed competent to stand trial on murder, terroristic threatening and weapons charges. 

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara ordered a Jan. 27 trial for Seon Keoni Aki. 

He is charged in the May 20 shooting death of a neighbor, Mateo D. Balinbin Jr., at Balinbin's home in Nanawale Estates. 

Three mental health professionals including a state psychologist determined that Aki and was capable of understanding charges against him and assisting in his defense. 

Prosecutors say Aki fired a gunshot that struck Balinbin in the head and brandished a pistol as he chased another neighbor out of Balinbin's home. 

Aki is a felon banned from possessing guns. 

He remains jailed at Hawaii Community Correctional Center with bail set at $360,000.
