State unemployment fund rebounds

Hawai`i businesses got an early Christmas present with Thursdays announcement by the State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations that the state unemployment taxes they pay will drop by an average of $300 per employee in 2014, due to a rebound in the fund used to pay jobless benefits.

The fund has grown as the number of unemployed workers drawing benefits has decreased, and is expected to total around $300 million this year, compared to $104 million in 2012. That means employers will pay an average of $680 per employee next year, instead of the $980 they currently pay.
