Double murder suspect found fit for trial

A Hilo man accused in a double homicide nearly a year ago is one step closer to a trial. Circuit Judge Greg Nakamura has ruled that 35-year old Sean Ivan Masa Matsumoto can understand the charges against him and assist in his own defense if he chooses to do so.

Matsumoto is accused in the February 11, 2013, shotgun slayings of his 45-year-old girlfriend, Rhonda Lynn Alohalani Ahu, and her 74-year-old mother, Elaine Ahu, at the home they shared with Matsumoto in Hilos Waiakea Houselots neighborhood.

Nakamura did not set a trial date for Matsumoto, but instead granted a defense request and scheduled a further proceedings hearing for 8:30 a.m. February 28.
