Students arrested in bottle-bomb blast suspended

HILO, Hawaii (AP) Two students arrested after a small bomb exploded at a Hawaii school have been suspended.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports the 16-year-old boys were suspended for six days.

The teens were arrested Thursday after a device described as a "bottle bomb" exploded outside an auditorium at Hilo High School on the Big Island. No one was injured.

Juvenile police-aid officer Lt. Lucille Melemai says the boys are suspected of terroristic threatening, but the investigation continues. Melemai says she doesn't know what action would follow if the boys were charged and convicted.

Department of Education spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz says the boys were suspended for such things as leaving a classroom during a lockdown without authorization. She says suspensions could exceed 10 days if the boys were found to be culpable.
