Big Island mayor outlines plan to reduce waste

HILO, Hawaii (AP) Big Island Mayor Billy Kenoi says he plans to pursue a waste-elimination project to address capacity problems at Hilo's landfill.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports Kenoi outlined plans Tuesday before the County Council, meeting as the Committee on Environmental Management.

A project could include a waste-to-energy incinerator.

Kenoi says a waste-to-energy facility would need to consume as much as 300 tons of garbage per day.

That's more than the Hilo landfill receives, so six transfers stations that send trash to another landfill would be rededicated to a new facility.

Kenoi says waste consumption is the best option for the county, given a position to trucking garbage another landfill and the high cost of expanding the Hilo landfill.
