One killed in South Kohala traffic mishap

A 52-year old man is dead following a head-on collision Wednesday morning on Queen Kaahumanu Highway, south of Puako Beach Drive. Police say the victim was heading south in a Ford F-250 pickup when he reportedly crossed the centerline near the 71-mile marker and struck a northbound Dodge Dart driven by a 62-year old male visitor from Canada shortly before 11:30 a.m.

The driver and sole occupant of the truck was taken to North Hawai`i Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle and his three passengers, all escaped injury. The accident temporarily closed a portion of the highway between Puako Beach Drive and the entrance to the Mauna Lani Resort.
