The Medical Examiner has completed an autopsy on a 39-year old Kona man who died in Police custody Tuesday, but will await toxicology and histology results before determining the cause of death. Randall Hatori of Kailua was a passenger in a car driven by 38-year old Ernest Ricky Alvarez that was pulled over for a traffic stop at a gas station in a shopping center on Palani Road around 12:30 a.m.
Hatori, who was wanted for assault and violating a temporary restraining order, got into a struggle with an officer while trying to flee and became unresponsive after being taken into custody. Fire personnel were summoned to the scene and took him to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 2:00 a.m. The officer also suffered injuries which required treatment. Alvarez was taken to the Kona police cellblock. In addition to the contempt charge, he was arrested on suspicion of promoting a dangerous drug. Detectives recovered 7.3 grams of methamphetamine at the scene of the struggle.
