County fined for landfill violations
(KPUA) The Countys Director of Environmental Management is asking the state for a hearing after the Department of Health levied a $350,000 fine over permit violations at two landfills. Bobby Jean Leithead Todd wants to contest the allegations and order saying many of the concerns raised during inspections at the Hilo and Pu`uanahulu landfills have been addressed.
The state says last years inspection at the Hilo facility found the county didnt cover solid waste or monitor for methane gas along the perimeter, while an inspection this year at the Pu`uanahulu landfill found nearly 1,000 tons of scrap met and appliances were stored without permits. Leithead Todd says the County resolved the solid waste issue with new tarps that were on order during the inspection.
