Voyaging canoes arrive in Hilo

(KPUA) The Polynesian voyaging canoes Hokulea and Hikianalia are now moored at Radio Bay in Hilo, where they will remain until later this month, when they embark on the first international leg of a three-year voyage.
The canoes departed O`ahu over the weekend and made a brief stopover on Maui, hen sailed across the Maui Channel, past the northern tip of Hawai`i Island, then encountered rough weather sailing down the islands east coast to Honoka`a.
Crews are expected to meet with local students this week, but will otherwise focus on final preparations before launching into the open sea. The canoes are set to depart for Tahiti on May 24, subject to weather and the status of their preparations.
