Hilo airport to receive $2 million for upgrades
(KPUA) U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono has announced that Hilo International Airport will receive a grant of more than $2 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The grant will fund the installation of approximately 12,500 linear feet of perimeter fencing to deter unauthorized persons, vehicles and wildlife from entering the field. The airport serves an average of 4,500 passengers per day, providing critical connections for inter-island, domestic and international travelers.
The funding is contained in the FY 2015 transportation appropriations bill being taken up this week in the U.S. Senate.
