(KPUA) The County officially assumes responsibility for Mauna Kea State Park today, and is promptly closing the facility for renovations until further notice.
Today's shutdown will enable Parks and Public Works crews to safely expedite work on refurbishing the parks restrooms, parking lot and picnic area located near the 34-mile marker of the Daniel K. Inouye Highway.
No camping reservations or permits will be issued until the area re-opens. Temporary restrooms will be provided around the clock during construction and located at the administration building fronting the parks entrance.
The park is expected to be renamed the Mauna Kea Recreation Area.
