Kulani Correctional Facility back in business

(KPUA) The Big Islands Kulani Correctional Facility is back in business, following Tuesdays grand re-opening. Kulani was closed in 2009 in response to the states fiscal crisis, resulting in the displacement of 90 employees and the re-location of 160 inmates.

The facility, located 20 miles southwest of Hilo, will house 200 low-risk inmates, beginning with its first group of 25 arriving this month.

There are currently 56 employees at Kulani with 16 new adult corrections officers scheduled to begin work in August and 19 other positions in various stages of recruitment.
