Miss America visits children in Honolulu hospital


HONOLULU (AP) — Children who are patients at a Honolulu hospital taught Miss America a bit about the islands. 

Reigning Miss America Laura Kaeppeler visited Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children Saturday. The children taught her how to make lei and joined in a hula lesson from Miss Hawaii Lauren Cheape. 

Traffic changes for Hilo Heart Walk Saturday


To accommodate a mass of walkers participating in the 15th Annual Hilo Heart & Stroke Walk & Health Fair, there will be a temporary one-way traffic pattern on Banyan Drive on Saturday, February 25. 

Traffic will be allowed to flow in the Puna, or easterly, direction on Banyan Drive between both ends of Lihiwai Street. The one-way traffic pattern will be in effect between the hours of 8:00

Nun to made saint for work at leprosy colony


HONOLULU (AP) — The Vatican has announced a nun who spent decades caring for patients segregated on the Kalaupapa leprosy colony on Molokai will be canonized a saint later this year. 

Pope Benedict XVI said Saturday that Mother Marianne Cope will be made a saint during a canonization ceremony on Oct. 21. 

Mixed martial arts could see more regulations


HONOLULU (AP) — Mixed martial arts could be redefined as a full contact sport where the objective is to physically damage the opponent. 

Hawaii lawmakers are considering the change so that other disciplines that use striking can be held to the same safety requirements as mixed martial arts. A state House committee will consider the change on Wednesday.
