Andres strengthens into our first hurricane of the season

TropicalStormUpdate_B93B97Hurricane season officially begins June 1st but already we’ve got our first formed hurricane of the season. Andres is still quite away from Hawaii but it’s gotten our attention.

The center of Hurricane Andres was located near latitude 12.8 North, longitude 114.8 West. Andres is moving toward the northwest near 7 mph (11 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue into Sunday morning.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km).
