Rain and wind and floods….Oho!

Happy Aloha Tuesday!

Tropical Storm Oho has been promoted to the rank of Hurricane. Category 1. Our Hawaii Island weather almost immediately began to reflect it.

Avid listener “Dr. Tracy” called in and said Honoka’a and Waimea were pouring rain and reminded everybody to get their lights on.  Then “Steve-O” called to say that there was a landslide near the Kaawalii Gulch and that police were directing one-lane only traffic.

Then around 8:30am this morning we received this alert: “Landside at Kaawalii Gulch. Expect delays for 2 hours.”

“A landslide is blocking the Hilo-bound lane of Hawaii Belt Road (Route 19) at Kawalii Gulch. Expect delays for up to two hours as travelers in both directions take turns using the road. State Highways workers are on the scene to clear the debris.”

Definitely a pain if you’re stuck in that traffic.

Then shortly thereafter another advisory from the Police Department was sent to us.

“Kahana Drive above Old Mamalahoa Highway in the Ahualoa area is closed between the 3- and 4-mile markers due flooding.”

Drive carefully out there, folks! Besides this crazier-than-usual weather we’ve been having there’s also the Ironman this weekend in West Hawaii. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for good weather for everyone competing.

‎Meanwhile, Oho‬ is the 7th hurricane of the season to churn over the Central Pacific and as of this writing, still not a big threat to Hawaii besides some enhanced moisture and some wind.
