Hawaii has 151 cases, Big Island stands at 10

The State Department of Health said on Saturday that the state’s COVID-19 case count is now 151, up 29 from  Friday.  One of these cases is a minor.  At recent briefings, both State Health Director Dr. Bruce Anderson and State Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Park said as the state conducts more tests, the case count will rise.

Of those testing positive, 8% have required hospitalization, and over 80% were residents returning from other areas. There have been no deaths attributed to COVID-19.   The DOH COVID-19 Task Force said as of Saturday, more than 7,000 tests have been done with 151  positive results.  Most tests are being done at private labs.  Most cases are Hawaii residents returning from travel or who have had connections to travelers, but there is some evidence of community spread, with the victims having no travel-related connections.

Hawaii County has 3 more reported  cases since Friday, bringing the Big Island’s case count to 10 total.  Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim says none are hospitalized.

At the Old Kona Airport COVID-19 screenings, medical professionals reported that out of the 299 people tested last Monday, 4 were known to test positive, all being college students who had returned from the mainland.   It’s not known if they are among the official count.
