Big Island hotels closing, few remain open

King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel has joined a growing list of properties which have closed in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Royal Kona Resort, in downtown Kailua Village, is also closed until further notice, most likely April 30, 2020.

Most hotels on the island have closed.  Ali’i Drive, usually bustling on a Saturday morning, was almost deserted.

The Sheraton Kona at Keauhou Bay remains open.   Manager Jennifer Gannon said flight crews are still staying overnight, and are not subject to the 14-day mandated quarantine for incoming travelers, but any other off-island visitors who arrive will be subject to the State’s quarantine rules.

Hawaii Island Visitor Bureau reports other hotels currently open include  Hilton Waikoloa, Fairmont Orchid, Grand Naniloa,  the Hilo Hawaiian, and the Manago Hotel.
