The Hawaii Tourism Authority and local hotels have partnered in a program called Hotels for Heroes. The program will provide hotel rooms for first responders from law enforcement agencies and the fire department, plus health care workers. In providing them a room away from home, officials hope the workers will not only be able to unwind during these stressful times, but also avoid get their families sick in case they contract the disease. In addition, some front line workers have very long commutes and with extended work hours, giving those workers a shorter commute will be good for the individuals and for the community at large in keeping workers better able to serve.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority has pre-blocked rooms in the following Big Island hotels:
Grand Naniloa Resort
Hilo Hawaiian Hotel
Kamuela Inn
Kanaloa at Kona
Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant
Waimea Country Lodge
Ross Birch of the Hawaii Island Visitors Bureau said the agencies have all designated individuals to coordinate the need within their organizations. Each hotel is charging $85 per night, and HTA has budgeted funds to help cover the expenses.
