Hawaii State adds 21 cases and 1 death, Big Island adds 3 cases

Hawaii State Department of Health has released the latest statistics for confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state.  Since Friday, 21 new cases have been confirmed, with 3 additional for the Big Island.  The State now has a total of 486 cases, and Hawaii Island has 34 cases.  There was one new reported death.

According to State Department of Health, a woman over 65-years-old is the ninth death from COVID-19. She had underlying medical conditions and had tested positive for the virus when she was hospitalized on O‘ahu.

Twenty adults and one minor are among the new cases of COVID-19 being reported by DOH.  Of this number, 16 are Hawai‘i residents, two are non-residents, and three  cases are of unknown residence, pending investigation. Eleven cases are community-spread, while ten are unknown, and none are associated with travel.  Lana‘i remains the only island with no reported cases.

As always, it’s important for everybody to wear masks when in public spaces such as stores and continue to stay at least 6 feet away from others.  This disease is highly communicable, and it’s not always clear how it spreads, so proper hand washing and other hygiene steps are important, such as cleaning off counters, wiping doorknobs, and some experts strongly recommend wiping down products purchased from stores as the coronavirus which causes COVID-19 lingers on plastic and card board for hours to days.

And as Dr. Nathan Tomita, surgeon and Medical Director of Ali’i Health Center, said in an interview on April 5, do not touch your face, especially nose, eyes, and mouth, as that is how the virus can sneak in.

The State’s noon report today also listed how many laboratory tests have been done.  The report is below.
