The Hawaii State Department of Health says there were only 5 new cases of COVID-19 confirmed between Sunday, April 12, and today. The State’s case count now is 504. No new deaths have been reported, and the State’s fatality rate from COVID-19 remains at 9.
Out of the State’s 504 cases, 315 have been released from quarantine, so 189 cases are in people who are still subject to State Department of Health quarantine and monitoring.
Hawaii County added one new case, for a total of 40 in the county. The State report does not break down those released from quarantine by County, but in the Monday morning County update, Hawaii County Mayor said that 25 have been cleared as recovered. Both Maui and Oahu added two cases.
Dr. Bruce Anderson, talking before the State House Select Committee on COVID-19 Economic and Financial Preparedness, said the orders to stay at home, maintain social distancing, and to wear a mask if one will be in a store or other places where there are people are critical to keeping COVID-19 at bay.
He did not address the situation on Maui, where at least 31 people may have been contracted COVID-19 because of a sick worker at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
Anderson stressed that additional testing would not change the requirements around isolation, distancing, wearing masks, and travel quarantines, but is useful for individual diagnostics. Although initially all cases were travel related, there is now community spread.
