The State of Hawaii now has 596 cumulative cases of COVID-19, with 4 new cases reported today. O’ahu had one new case, and Maui, two. Hawaii County added one to the case count, bringing the Big Island to 68 cumulative cases.
The State Department of Health has not yet released additional information, so it’s not known if the newest case is part of the McDonald’s Kona cluster. West Hawaii Today reported today that one Kona Patrol Officer has tested positive for COVID-19, and is in isolation.
Today’s statewide total includes 389 cases on Oahu, 112 in Maui County, 68 on Hawaii island, and 21 in Kauai County, according to health officials. Around 76% — 455– of those who have tested positive have now recovered. Twelve people have died.
State health and government officials have repeatedly said that the state’s isolation and shutdown policies, plus physical distancing and social isolation policies, have helped the state maintain a low case count. The state is under a “stay at home, work at home” order, except for essential businesses and essential travel outside the home, through April 30. Governor David Ige said on Monday he may extend that order. On O’ahu, Mayor Kirk Caldwell has extended that island’s “stay at home” order through May 31, but is reopening City and County parks for activities (but not lounging) starting Saturday. All four county mayors will appear on the PBS Hawaii Insights program this evening at 8 p.m. to discuss each county’s progress and policies.
