The Hawai’i State Department of Health is reporting the 13th and 14th deaths associated with COVID-19 in the state.
One is an O’ahu man who had been hospitalized since the beginning of April, was over 65-years-old, and had underlying medical conditions. He had a history of travel to Las Vegas in March. The other is also an O’ahu man, over 65-years-old, who’d also been hospitalized recently and also had underlying health conditions. His infection was the result of community-associated spread.
As of noon on Friday, April 24, the State is reporting a total of 601 cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the state, with 5 new as of today. The number of people who have recovered is 469, with 67 people statewide requiring hospitalization, a jump of 4 since yesterday’s report. Hawaii Island has 69 cases, with 40 people recovered. One person is hospitalized at Kona Community Hospital, as of Wednesday afternoon. State Health Director Bruce Anderson has also said one person from the McDonald’s cluster of at least 32 was sent to O’ahu for treatment.
Kaua’i County has had no new cases for 20 days and has had 21 cumulative cases with 19 people now released from isolation. O’ahu’s cumulative count is 392 and Maui’s, 113.
Nationwide, 5.1 million people have been tested. In Hawaii, as of Thursday, nearly 27,000 people had been tested. The UH Center for Public Policy issued a report April 15 that says testing is a key to Hawaii being able to reopen, so health and government officials know what the state’s real situation is regarding any COVID-19. An interview with Dr. Robert Perkinson talking with New West Broadcasting’s Sherry Bracken goes into detail on the steps. On Thursday, Sen. Brian Schatz said there is $21.3 million coming to Hawaii to support the state’s testing capacity, including for the research, development, validation, manufacturing, purchasing, and administration of tests and testing supplies.
