On Thursday, 166 visitors, 89 “intended residents,” 196 residents fly into state

Hawaii Tourism Authority says that on Thursday, 640 people arrived in Hawaii, including 166 visitors, 89 “intended residents,” and 196 residents.   That included 12 visitors to Hawaii Island and 20 “intended residents.”

At a meeting of the Senate Special Committee on COVID-19, chaired by Senator Donovan delaCruz,  Department of Transportation Airports Division Deputy Director Ross Higashi was asked about the seemingly large number of “intended residents” coming into the State.  These are people who declare their intent to remain in Hawaii indefinitely, but Sen. delaCruz noted there is no real way to monitor that.  Members of the committee questioned whether these people might be staying at what are now illegal vacation rentals, given that no vacation rentals are considered “essential businesses.”   Members of the committee have been critical of what they feel is a lack of ability to track those coming in, both visitors and “intended residents” while they are in quarantine.  Sen. delaCruz said he plans to go to the Honolulu Airport and watch the arrival and confirmation process himself.

This Hawaii Tourism Authority chart only lists flights coming in from out of state, not interisland visitors.
