The only new case of COVID-19 reported today in the state is on Hawaii Island, according to State Department of Health. Dr. Bruce Anderson said it’s an adult male in Kona. That leaves the Big Island with 75 cumulative cases, with 63 of those people released from isolation, so 12 active cases are being monitored by State Department of Health’s Hawaii Island branch.
Anderson said the adult male in today’s case is not associated with the McDonald’s Kona cluster, but that there are 3 clusters in Kona. One is a family of 4, all of whom have COVID-19.
Hawaii Island has added 5 new cases in the past week.
The state now has 621 cumulative cases, with 548 released from isolation, so 73 active cases are being monitored. The death toll has not increased and stands at 17.
The State Department of Health has repeatedly said that contact tracing is critical for any cases of COVID-19–finding out with whom the infected party has had close contacts since 2 days before any symptoms began. State DOH says it has 30 contact tracers who have traced, so far, 1,636 contacts. They are also monitoring 979 travelers who are supposed to be on 14-day quarantines.
In a State House hearing on Monday, Dr. Mugiishi said what’s needed is 30 contact tracers for each 100,000 population, which for the State’s population of 1.4 million alone would be 420 people and for the total of 3 million that could be anticipated with travelers, at least 900 would be needed. Dr Mugiishi said he’s had volunteers from the entire population of nursing students and Major Gen. Kenneth Hara of HIEMA says he has qualified National Guard personnel who can also help.
