On Wednesday at its regular press conference, the World Health Organization said the worldwide case increase of more than 106,000 cases between Tuesday and Wednesday was the largest ever. In the United States, cases jumped up by 23,775 between Wednesday and this morning, and deaths climbed by 1,457. Based on the daily average deaths over the past ten days, the U.S. could reach 100,000 deaths by next Wednesday.
Russia is now second to the United States in the number of cases, with 317,554, and 3,099 deaths. Brazil follows, with 297,380 cases and 18,859 deaths.
Hawaii’s cumulative case count is 643, and as of Wednesday, State Department of Health said 578 had been released from isolation, so it’s monitoring 65 active cases. Three of those are on Hawaii Island, which has added 4 new cases over the last week and has a cumulative total of 79 cases.
In a release Tuesday afternoon, State DOH said they now considered the Maui Memorial COVID-19 outbreak to be closed, with 52 people having been confirmed as part of that cluster. The McDonald’s cluster in Kona is also no longer under investigation after 36 people–employees and close contacts–were infected.
