Macy’s Big Island stores reopen

The two Macy’s stores on the island are now open.  Both the Macy’s in Kona at Makalapua Center, next to the Makalapua Cinemas, and the Macy’s at Prince Kuhio Mall, reopened on Friday, May 22.  Both stores are now open from 11 a.m until 7 p.m. daily.

The stores have implemented extra cleaning and sanitation procedures–cleaning high-touch surfaces such as door handles frequently (see photo below of the Macy’s at Makalapua Center–with door handles being cleaned), and sanitizing counters and the credit card machines and the keypads between customers.  One big difference is that the dressing rooms are not open, so people cannot try on clothing in the stores.  The employees advise that customers may take things home to try on, and return them with the tags on for a refund.

Customers must wear masks or cloth face coverings when in the store.

Employees who did not wish to be quoted said they were grateful that even during the time Macy’s was closed, the store kept the employees on their benefits program, including covering health insurance.

Macy’s closed all its stores nationwide on March 17 because of the outbreak of COVID-19.
