How do U.S. COVID cases and deaths (104K) stack up?

The Sunday morning, May 31 Johns Hopkins COVID-19 Dashboard at 7:32 a.m.:

Worldwide cases: 6,112,902    Worldwide deaths: 370,416

U.S. cases: 1,778,515    U.S. deaths: 104,051

The chart below is a look at COVID in some key countries.  The population data was from U.S. Census and other sources; COVID onset date for Brazil from virological. org;  COVID onset date for United Kingdom from the BBC;   COVID onset date for all other countries from the U.S. National Institutes of Health; COVID cases and deaths from the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 dashboard.  All numbers are approximate.  The data is listed in the order of size of population.

South Korea’s situation is often cited, in that by the end of February they had the most cases in the world outside of China.  But now, they have one of the lowest death tolls.  The Atlantic is just one example of a publication that’s talked about how the country did it –aggressive contact tracing, extensive testing, isolation, and hospitalization of victims when appropriate.
